It was a Tuesday in February, 2008, and we were standing in a rowhouse kitchen in Tacony, watching a man in his seventies write a check for $790. Summer mornings in his workshop in Whitman smelled of cutting oil and pipe dope and the particular sharpness of galvanized steel when you scored it with a tubing cutter.
